My name is Patti and I have been a Dental Hygienist for 20 years and have been in the dental profession for over 25. Several years ago, after sharpening her instruments to surprise her while she was on vacation, my friend and co hygienist said to me….”You know, you really should start your own sharpening service!” At the time I had no idea that I could actually do that, nor did I have the extra time for it then. Well, Fast forward about 10 years and guess what…I STARTED MY OWN SHARPENING SERVICE !!! I started this as a side gig and wow… just wow, I did not realize how much I would enjoy putting the smiles on my fellow hygienists’ faces with each first stroke of a newly sharpened instrument!!! The joy and appreciation makes me so happy to do what I do.

As we all know, Time is production and production means we have a job! I have learned over the years that there is little that is more important to a hygienist than to have the right tools for the job and sharp instruments are on top of the list. Where do you find the time to sharpen, do you enjoy doing it, and even better yet are you even good at it? I never had time between patients in a busy days schedule to be able to effectively sharpen my instruments and have them all sharp at the same time or try to figure out some coding method to keep track of what was sharp and what wasn’t. We are in an ever evolving and extremely busy profession and our focus should be on our patients and the care we give them, but also on our own well being while giving that care. Having sharp tools is essential is the longevity of our clinical careers. I take pride in helping my clients keep their tools sharp and their skills even sharper by taking this burden off of their task list so that they can focus on caring for their patients well.
